NAME: Hans Humpty
CANON: Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers
CANON POINT: Post Vol. 5 of the light novel
AGE: "Not much older or younger than 18", I'll be playing him as 20!
BACKGROUND: Link, but given that it doesn't have information for the later volumes, here's a link to someone's translation of a full summary of events up to volume six. I can expand on anything if needed!
PERSONALITY:
If Hans were summed up into a word, that word would be "dangerous". Despite how he may come across at a glance, all disarming grins and jokes in a bundle of raggedy clothes and cat puns, everything he says or does, with few exceptions, is with purpose and direction. He's the type who may play nice in a group, but has already thought twelve steps ahead of the rest and is ready to turn alliances around on their head at a moment's notice. His resourcefulness, quick-thinking, and good judgement are often relied upon by his companions throughout the series, and his background as an assassin provides him with the experience required to analyze a situation, plan for it accordingly, and adjust the plan to better suit his needs in the moment. He is very quick to learn and to adapt, which allows him to accurately read and predict movements; even a particularly skilled and powerful fiend wielding lightning magic was unable to hit him with a single strike.
His cleverness can admittedly turn on him at times however, and in fact has been proven to be a serious--and potentially fatal--flaw. He'll occasionally over-analyze a situation and disregard or just outright miss the most obvious answer, even when it's placed right in front of him. This can lead to inaction as Hans refuses to engage any further, leaving openings for opponents or other sources of trouble while he tries to determine where the trump card might be hidden.
For the most part though, Hans is often the most rational man in the room, even in extreme situations. His ability to see logic without emotional bias is what allows him to make such sound judgement calls for the sake of his end goal. They aren't always the most popular calls, given his general disregard for playing people-pleaser, but more often than not they're the ones that need to be made for the best overall results. The most blatant example of this is when Hans is killed by someone he had, up until then, tentatively considered an ally. After he's brought back to life, rather than demand justice of his killer, he's able to acknowledge that they're still necessary to the mission at hand. He more or less decides to brush it under the rug (with a simple warning that his lenience wouldn't be shown a second time, and that they're lucky to be in the position they are) and doesn't bother holding a grudge over it. He's very much mind over matter, and often ends up as the voice of reason among his peers because of it.
That said, on the topic of peers, Hans doesn't exactly make a habit of befriending others. He actually goes so far as to say he would rather fight someone than make friends with them, including those he doesn't mind the company of otherwise. While his independence does come with its own set of benefits, it's unfortunately led him to become severely suspicious of the people he meets, even well after he's gotten to know them. He fully believes that anyone can become an enemy at any given point, and this can cause him to come off as cold, distant, and potentially outright heartless at times. His personal plans and intentions are his own to know, and for others to find out as they play their part--if he does discuss anything beforehand, he will only reveal exactly what that individual needs to hear to keep things running smoothly. It's not unusual for him to put those he considers allies through tests to determine whether he can truly trust them or not, unbeknownst to the individual and regardless of any life-threatening risks posed.
In the incredibly likely chance they DO happen to be in serious danger, it won't be until the last possible moment that he steps in to save them. This isn't out of any sort of sadistic interest, mind, but rather for the sake of an unfortunately dangerous means of lie-detection. Since people can easily lie with their words and actions, Hans' way of living has taught him that the only time a person is completely honest is the moment before they die. In reading the individual's expression the moment before they "kick off", Hans believes he can get a more accurate feel for how trustworthy they really are. His morals are just a bit questionable thanks to the ten years of being a hired killer he has under his belt, but the one thing he absolutely cannot stand is lying. He holds himself to the same standards he expects of others, and in fact there's only one instance in canon where he chose to intentionally misinform someone, versus his usual approach of withholding information deemed unnecessary from the beginning. As for anyone else, it's not unheard of for him to threaten someone who has lied to him, and he's gone so far as to hold a blade to their neck and offer their life in exchange for an apology.
Although he doesn't refrain from threats or violence, he does hold a rather strict policy to not kill unless it pays. Money and fun are primary motivators for him, to such a degree that his first step after being chosen as one of the destined few to literally save the world was to go to the king of the nearest kingdom and demand a reward for his efforts. In his own words: "Meowney is important. I was born to have a fun, exciting life. None of that happens if you ain't got the coin."
POWERS/ABILITIES:
- Skilled Assassin: Hans excels in speed, stealth, and close-quarters combat, using dual blades as a comfortable extension of himself. He's able to perform feats of inhuman agility, utilizing everything from speed, strength, reflexes, balance, and flexibility. He can even twist himself in midair, much like a cat might to readjust their balance. Hans is also a lot stronger than the average human, but especially in regards to his arms. While standing or walking on his knuckles, he's able to do anything from spins to outright propelling himself well into the air, all while wielding his swords mid-fight. He can also gouge his swords well into the trunks of trees, use them as quick handholds, and shove off with little to no resistance.
- Incredible Stamina: His stamina is... wild, honestly. He's been known to fight and run for hours on end without feeling the slightest bit tired. He might break a sweat, but the chances of outrunning him or outlasting him in a fight are extraordinarily slim.
- Illusory Ability: He's able to deceive his opponents by using what could be considered a near-illusory method. By cutting someone in a "certain way" (he approaches them with a tangible intent to kill, and moves with the intent to follow), he can cause someone to believe that he's caused significant or even fatal damage to them--usually just long enough for him to stand back and catch their expression. The effectiveness of the trick obviously depends on his opponent as well as circumstance, but he'll occasionally resort to this as a means of judging someone's true intentions. (This will be used with permission only!)
- Immobilization: Somewhat related to the ability above, Hans is capable of projecting such a tangible, predatory intent that it can overwhelm anyone near enough and cause them to go full deer-in-the-headlights mode. Frozen in place, increased heart rate, cold sweat, the whole shebang!! It can be broken out of, but it takes some decent effort even for an extremely powerful fiend. Fortunately, it's exceedingly rare that he'll go so far, and it only seems to apply if he has the element of surprise and isn't holding back at all. (This will DEFINITELY be used with permission only!!)
- A Cat's Senses: Hans' senses are especially acute for a human's. He's able to skillfully maneuver new and unfamiliar terrain with his eyes closed and only his hearing to go by, and he can also pick up on extremely subtle audible and visual cues, as per necessity of avoiding traps as an assassin.
- Brave of the Six Flowers: This will likely be irrelevant in-game, but on the left-hand side of his chest, just over his heart, is the Crest of the Six Flowers, a mark that designates Hans as one of the six Braves and protects him from the lethal, airborne toxins in the Howling Vilelands. It has a very faint pinkish glow. If a fellow Brave dies, the Crest will lose one of its petals; if they're revived, it'll come back as if nothing happened.
